Dr. Otieno is a holder of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in health informatics with extensive experience in biostatistics and large dataset analysis. He has a practical approach to problem solving and a flexible and self-directed attitude to working as an individual and within a team. He has exceptional organizational and training skills developed through holding leadership and management positions in public institutions and as an independent consultant. He has also a proven track record in quality improvement initiatives. His primary research interests are in the use of informatics tools to improve healthcare delivery and patient safety in developing country settings.
My other research areas of interest revolve around impact evaluation of health interventions, monitoring and evaluation of healthcare programs, encoding information from narrative clinical reports, and health systems strengthening through use of technology. Otieno has experience working with UNICEF having been a principal investigator in the capacity building for elimination of mother to child transmission of HIV/AIDS and as a co-principal investigator for the qualitative Study on Barriers and Supportive factors in the Uptake of MNCH Services in Homabay and Turkana Counties, Kenya.
Otieno has got great experience using several statistical packages for data analysis including STATA, SPSS, EPI Info and SAS. In this study, he will be instrumental is supporting study design, data management, analysis and reporting, ODK template development and database configuration, quality audit checks of the data from the field and report writing. I have widely published in peer-reviewed journals (Google Scholar links here).
In addition to my PhD, I have undertaken several short courses in impact evaluation of health programs.
